More Painting Because I Want To

In my recently reduced 36,000 photos on my laptop, there are many that I want to paint. Some are simple single subjects, and others are complex scenery requiring many photos. Occasionally I scoot the photos into a folder on the desktop in case I get an opportunity to just paint because I want to, instead of always choosing the subjects that I know will sell to the many visitors who pass through Three Rivers and Mineral King.

Because I don’t have any upcoming gallery shows or boutiquey fairs, I get to paint what I feel like painting. It feels very extravagant. However, I am viewing it as my reward for the many hours I am spending on the phone with people to repair brokenness on the blog and difficulty moving all my photos to a flash drive. These things are ridiculously complicated, usually requiring many hours of relearning things that have been changed.

Hence, I paint from the photos that inspire me. My two main sources of inspiration are: 1. This will sell and 2. Oh how beautiful!

These are all 8×8″ canvases, bought at a bulk bargain price awhile ago. I’m painting small because I can finish more. Plus, these feel experimental, and if they look dumb, at least it didn’t take a month to complete.

Rose: not finished, but moving closer to the most totally satisfying and gratifying detail stage.

Wayne the Rooster, 8×8″, oil on wrapped canvas, $150 (plus tax if you live in California)

Gilroy Gate: maybe finished, maybe wants some improvement. My friend Jee-umm (that’s “Jim” in Texas talk) built this gate. We all know that horseshoes should go the other direction, but they don’t hang that way. Should we title this piece Bad Luck Gate?

A boy at the beach: this one will be a real challenge. It is not a commission, and if it turns out well, it will be a gift. (The boy’s mom is not one of my tens of readers, so I have no fear of ruining a surprise.)

You can preorder now, here: https://mineral-king-preservation-society.square.site/ Trail Guy and I designed these a number of years ago, and then turned it all over to the Mineral King Preservation Society to use as a fund raising method. 1. The email worked for me too! And I can come here to comment directly from the email, which is very handy! Great job, Jana! Your patience paid off!

    • Thank you, Michelle, but it still isn’t fixed. Some people got an email notification, some did not. Elisabeth sent me to someone who is an expert in WordPress dot org, and we’ve been communicating. I am feeling quite hopeful that she will be able to fix this (unless she freaked out when I asked if I could pay her by check through the mail!)

  2. Yeah! I finally got your blog again. I thought I had lost you forever!

    • YEA, Kathy! Thank you for letting me know!

  3. I got today’s email. Hurray!

    • YEA, NIKKI!! Thank you for letting me know.

  4. Hey, the blog-by-email is working, yay!

I thought I had a lot of photos in my phone . . . but 36,000?? How do you 1) organize them, and 2) find the one photo you’re thinking of but don’t remember the date taken?

    MK T-shirt already pre-ordered!

    • Welcome back, Sharon! I knew there was a problem when I didn’t hear from you. It’s not solved yet, but progress is being made.

My photos are automatically arranged by year. I have created many albums to find things quickly, albums like Paintings, Drawings, Big Trees, Wilsonia. . . and I often remember which year a certain event took place. If I don’t remember the year, I remember about which month and then I search through by month (i.e. all the Aprils around the year I think something happened.) This is on my laptop, not my phone. As soon as I send inferior phone photos to the laptop, I delete them from the phone.

YEA for a new MK tee, because they do eventually wear out!

  5. Hallelujah ! This showed up in my email this morning! So happy!

    • Anne, great to know —thank you! Now I have to figure out the pattern of which subscribers received notification and which did not. The saga continues…
