Poppy Peeping

The poppies and other wildflowers were at at their peak on March 11. Three friends and I took the afternoon off to go fill our eyes.

First, we had to empty our wallets to fill the gas tank. Welcome to Three Rivers.

Then we headed down around the lake, and up Dry Creek Road, all within eastern Tulare County.

This last photo shows Terminus Dam in the distance, which creates Kaweah Lake. The flowers weren’t fabulous right there at the Dry Creek Preserve, but it was clear and green, which is pretty fabulous on its own.

We never did get out amidst the flowers but stayed on the shoulder of the road, and actually did no trespassing whatsoever.

I must be finally growing up.

  1. Blog etiquette is lame. Anonymous is Brad. See you next month !

    • Hi Brad! I guessed it might be you, but then thought it could be Lou Dove or one of your girls, or another friend from S.A. Nice to hear from you, and about next month, Trail Guy only wants to go to the thing at the gallery on Saturday. So glad you are coming!

  2. Love poppy season (orange blossoms as well). Thanks for the soulful memory. Bluebonnets ready to bust out here. Up to $3.69 a gallon here in Austin and we are MAD!

    • Anonymous, today we gleaned oranges in Lemon Cove and the blossoms are starting, the best smell in the world!

I think Bluebonnets are in the lupine family.

$3.69/gallon is a bargain now. HORRIBLE. (Let them drive cake? Let them eat Teslas?)

  3. A friend of mine took a photo a few days ago of a Chevron station in DTLA (DownTown Los Angeles). Price for Regular was $7.31. Bleah!

My favorite memory of poppies on a hillside was when I was driving back from attending my grandmother’s (Mary Dixon) memorial service. Just south of Gorman, the hillsides were covered in poppies–it was one of those “banner years” when the rain and sun combine to produce a bumper crop. So I took a detour at Hwy. 138 and drove by the California Poppy Reserve. Wow, such an amazing plethora of color!

    • Sharon, I don’t know about the California Poppy Reserve and can’t think of where Highway 138 is. Thanks for the comment and something new to look up!

About those gas prices: the SaveThePlanets won’t rest until it hits $10/gallon and then they’ll say to us the equivalent of “let them eat cake” — “go buy a Tesla”.

      • Hwy. 138 is an east-west road that goes from I-5 near Gorman to Lancaster. And the poppy reserve: http://parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627

You can just drive along the highway with fields of poppies on both sides, or there are places you can park and walk (on specially created paths) among the fields of poppies. Glorious!

So you can’t afford gas? Just plunk down $50,000+ for a Tesla. Which, by the way, uses batteries that catch on fire, mined using children in 3rd world countries, and can never be disposed of safely. Yeah, that’s gonna save the planet. Or, ride a bicycle to Visalia to run your errands. Or visit your cabin (going to would be a pain; returning from would be a breeze . . . until your brakes gave out)!

(P.S. You think mankind is ruining the planet? Read Revelation and see what God has planned for “Mother Earth!”)

    • I looked up the California Poppy Reserve. If gas wasn’t so expensive, I’d head that way TODAY!

      • I really think it would be worth the gas to visit, but only on a really good year when the poppies are out in force. You can check for that on the website, I think.
