Seven Big Tree Oil Paintings

Sequoias, Big Trees, Redwoods. Since discovering the 6×18″ canvas size, I have painted redwoods on them seven times.

You can see that sometimes I used the same photo. I don’t know if these are shown here in the order painted, but I know for sure the last one is the most recent (and still quite wet at the time of this writing). I happen to like it best, which is a good sign that my skills have improved.

P.S. These trees are in Tulare County, right here in California’s flyover country. They are something about which we can feel good. There are many things about which we can feel good here, but if you know someone who wants to move here, go ahead and remind them that we are fat, uneducated, and poor. Oh, and there is high unemployment, bad air, and no Trader Joe’s either.

P.S. It costs a fortune to have a transplant, and while insurance covers much, there is much more that it does not cover. If you feel generous and inclined to help my friend, Rachelle, this is the best way to do so: HelpHopeLive.Org

  1. I love, love, love these big tree paintings. When I visit someday soon (my fingers are crossed), I hope you have one in your inventory to come home with me. These big beauties are near and dear to my heart. Thank you for capturing them so wonderfully!

    • Aw shucks, Jess, thank you! All you have to do is let me know when you will be here and I’ll have one ready for you. Or put a bug in W’s ear and maybe one will appear for your b’day!

  2. I vote for the first tree. It gives the perspective of looking up from below, wide bottom with narrowing at the top. I like the color and the shadow of the branches on the trunk. That’s my 2 cents.

    • Nikki, another drawing student today told me the same thing. I wish I knew better what order I painted them in so I could see if my skills have improved! Thank you for checking in.

  3. Why, it’s almost as if you were actually discouraging flatlanders to move to 3R . . . and then lobby to add a TJ’s!

P.S. I like your most recent one the best, too, with #4 a close second.

    • Sharon, this place is filling up with refugees from the cities, has been for years, but ultimately most give up when they learn that they can’t change us and they get tired of driving to Fresno for TJ’s.

Thank you for your assessment of the paintings. I have a hard time telling if they are getting any better or not.

      • I don’t get the lure of TJ’s. Ralphs/Safeway/Stater Bros./Food 4 Less all suffice just fine for me. Plus, who wants to pay $5 per avocado or $15 for a bottle of olive oil?
