New Odd Job

“Odd” means “unusual”, as in I’ve never done this before.

I’ll give you a break from Mineral King wildflower oil paintings and show you my new project. This is a commission, which is a fancy word for custom art work.

A customer/friend sent me this and asked if I could do an oil painting of her family’s coat of arms.

I said something like, “Sure, but first we’ll have to decide on some color.” She then sent me this.

So I looked up meanings to the parts of Coats of Arms. We learned even the colors have meanings.

Next she sent me this.

Time for some Photoshopping (I use Photoshop Elements, which is really just Photoshop Junior).

Come back tomorrow to see how this developed.

  1. We can’t wait to see it either! It would be fun to hear more about the origin, time in history also. Fun project!

    • Linda and Tom, Sharon and I sort of made up some stuff, so it isn’t exactly authentically historical, although she learned that “Devol” means “of the valley”, which was very appropriate.

    • Hello, Linda and Tom. My background is French Huguenot. I found multiple versions of our Coat of Arms, combined them all, changed the pointy swirls to more ribbon-like, and added a touch of Mineral King on the shield, making it more personal. It’s been a fun research project!

      • Thank you, Sharon!

  2. Absolutely fascinating! I can’t wait to see the next step!!

    • I’m having fun with this one, Sharon, thank you!

      • I get it. It’s like after spending days, weeks, months crocheting afghans, and someone asks me to crochet them a doily. Same art, completely different medium and design. It’s a nice break from the usual routine.
