Turbulent Times

Sometimes I tell you about the good parts of living in Three Rivers (running into people at the Post Office or on a walk, having a mailbox at the bottom of my driveway to drop off things). Sometimes I tell you the bad parts, which are mostly attributable to Tulare County in general rather than Three Rivers.

The down side to living in a self-contained small town and community is that when bad things happen, no one is untouched. Last week Three Rivers lost 2 men to suicide. Each had his own reasons which are not public knowledge, and each one left a trail of broken-hearted and baffled people behind. The ripples of sadness extend outward into every part of town.

This pencil drawing is called “Turbulent Times”, and it feels appropriate right now.

    • Thank you, Jennifer. Gobsmacked is the best word I can think of for it – we are just gobsmacked. Been thinking about you, praying for you some, thinking about emailing, just trudging along without much focus this week.

  1. Oh I am so sorry to hear this… What a sad story. I wonder what could possibly have felt so bad? I used to live very near the famous suicide spot, Beachy Head. I’ve moved 16 miles inland now but it’s still local. A couple of weeks ago, someone jumped and landed on a ledge… They escaped with just a broken ankle. I wonder how they feel about it now they have been given this second chance? Anyway, the drawing is beautiful. So detailed and you really have captured such energy in the water. It really is fabulous! And yes, it’s a very fitting title.

    • Sandra, thank you for stopping by and checking in. I appreciate your compliments. Your art is fabulous, and I am in awe of your precision and titles.

  2. I am so sorry.

    • Thank you, Sally. We are all just trudging onward, trying to find some level of understanding.

  3. How very sad to learn when people think death is better than life. Most discover–too late–that it is far from true.

I’ve never lived in a small town–or anywhere under a population of 120,000. There are advantages and disadvantages of small-town living, but I probably will never know at this time in my life (waxing nostalgic, here)!

Enjoy what God has gifted you with, hug your loved ones often, rejoice in what is good!

    • Sharon, it all defies logic. No words for any of it, and yet we all just keep talking, talking, talking. . .
